1. അക്കാലത്തു യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരെ വിട്ടു ഹീരാ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു അദുല്ലാമ്യന്റെ അടുക്കൽ ചെന്നു;

1. Akkaalaththu Yehoodhaa Thante Sahodharanmaare Vittu Heeraa Ennu Perulla Oru Adhullaamyante Adukkal Chennu;

1. At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah.

2. അവിടെ ശൂവാ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു കനാന്യന്റെ മകളെ കണ്ടു; അവളെ പരിഗ്രഹിച്ചു അവളുടെ അടുക്കൽ ചെന്നു.

2. There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and lay with her;

3. she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.

4. അവൾ പിന്നെയും ഗർഭംധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന്നു ഔനാൻ എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

4. Aval Pinneyum Garbhamdharichu Oru Makane Prasavichu; Avannu Aunaan Ennu Perittu.

4. She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan.

5. അവൾ പിന്നെയും ഗർഭം ധരിച്ചു ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന്നു ശേലാ എന്നു പേരിട്ടു. അവൾ ഇവനെ പ്രസവിച്ചപ്പോൾ അവൻ കെസീബിൽ ആയിരുന്നു.

5. She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.

6. യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ ആദ്യജാതനായ ഏരിന്നു താമാർ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു ഭാര്യയെ എടുത്തു.

6. Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

7. യെഹൂദയുടെ ആദ്യജാതനായ ഏർ യഹോവേക്കു അനിഷ്ടനായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു യഹോവ അവനെ മരിപ്പിച്ചു.

7. But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight; so the LORD put him to death.

8. അപ്പോൾ യെഹൂദാ ഔനാനോടു: നിന്റെ ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അടുക്കൽ ചെന്നു അവളോടു ദേവരധർമ്മം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു, ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ പേർക്കും സന്തതിയെ ഉളവാക്കുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

8. Appol Yehoodhaa Aunaanodu: Ninte Jyeshdante Bhaaryayude Adukkal Chennu Avalodu Dhevaradharmmam Anushdichu, Jyeshdante Perkkum Santhathiye Ulavaakkuka Ennu Paranju.

8. Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother."

9. എന്നാൽ ആ സന്തതി തന്റേതായിരിക്കയില്ല എന്നു ഔനാൻ അറികകൊണ്ടു ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അടുക്കൽ ചെന്നപ്പോൾ ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്നു സന്തതിയെ കൊടുക്കാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു നിലത്തു വീഴ്ത്തിക്കളഞ്ഞു.

9. Ennaal Aa Santhathi Thantethaayirikkayilla Ennu Aunaan Arikakondu Jyeshdante Bhaaryayude Adukkal Chennappol Jyeshdannu Santhathiye Kodukkaathirikkendathinnu Nilaththu Veezhththikkalanju.

9. But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother.

10. അവൻ ചെയ്തതു യഹോവേക്കു അനിഷ്ടമായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു അവൻ ഇവനെയും മരിപ്പിച്ചു.

10. Avan Cheythathu Yahovekku Anishdamaayirunnathukondu Avan Ivaneyum Marippichu.

10. What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also.

11. അപ്പോൾ യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ മരുമകളായ താമാരോടു: എന്റെ മകൻ ശേലാ പ്രാപ്തിയാകുവോളം നീ അപ്പന്റെ വീട്ടിൽ വിധവയായി പാർക്ക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; ഇവനും സഹോദരന്മാരെപ്പോലെ മരിച്ചുപോകരുതു എന്നു അവൻ വിചാരിച്ചു; അങ്ങനെ താമാർ അപ്പന്റെ വീട്ടിൽപോയി പാർത്തു.

11. Appol Yehoodhaa Thante Marumakalaaya Thaamaarodu: Ente Makan Shelaa Praapthiyaakuvolam Nee Appante Veettil Vidhavayaayi Paarkka Ennu Paranju; Ivanum Sahodharanmaareppole Marichupokaruthu Ennu Avan Vichaarichu; Angane Thaamaar Appante Veettilpoyi Paarththu.

11. Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Live as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up." For he thought, "He may die too, just like his brothers." So Tamar went to live in her father's house.

12. After a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.

13. നിന്റെ അമ്മായപ്പൻ തന്റെ ആടുകളെ രോമം കത്രിക്കുന്ന അടിയന്തരത്തിന്നു തിമ്നെക്കു പോകുന്നു എന്നു താമാരിന്നു അറിവു കിട്ടി.

13. When Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,"

14. ശേലാ പ്രാപ്തിയായിട്ടും തന്നെ അവന്നു ഭാര്യയായി കൊടുത്തില്ല എന്നു കണ്ടിട്ടു അവൾ വൈധവ്യവസ്ത്രം മാറ്റിവെച്ചു, ഒരു മൂടുപടം മൂടി പുതെച്ചു തിമ്നെക്കു പോകുന്ന വഴിക്കുള്ള എനയീംപട്ടണത്തിന്റെ ഗോപുരത്തിൽ ഇരുന്നു.

14. Shelaa Praapthiyaayittum Thanne Avannu Bhaaryayaayi Koduththilla Ennu Kandittu Aval Vaidhavyavasthram Maattivechu, Oru Moodupadam Moodi Puthechu Thimnekku Pokunna Vazhikkulla Enayeempattanaththinte Gopuraththil Irunnu.

14. she took off her widow's clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.

15. യെഹൂദാ അവളെ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ അവൾ മുഖം മൂടിയിരുന്നതു കൊണ്ടു ഒരു വേശ്യ എന്നു നിരൂപിച്ചു.

15. Yehoodhaa Avale Kandappol Aval Mukham Moodiyirunnathu Kondu Oru Veshya Ennu Niroopichu.

15. When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

16. Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, "Come now, let me sleep with you.And what will you give me to sleep with you?" she asked.

17. ഞാൻ ആട്ടിൻ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ നിന്നു ഒരു കോലാട്ടിൻ കുട്ടിയെ നിനക്കു കൊടുത്തയക്കാം എന്നു അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു. നീ കൊടുത്തയക്കുവോളത്തിന്നു ഒരു പണയം തരുമോ എന്നു അവൾ ചോദിച്ചു.

17. Njaan Aattin Koottaththil Ninnu Oru Kolaattin Kuttiye Ninakku Koduththayakkaam Ennu Avan Paranju. Nee Koduththayakkuvolaththinnu Oru Panayam Tharumo Ennu Aval Chodhichu.

17. "I'll send you a young goat from my flock," he said. "Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?" she asked.

18. എന്തു പണയം തരേണം എന്നു അവൻ ചോദിച്ചതിന്നു നിന്റെ മുദ്രമോതിരവും മോതിരച്ചരടും നിന്റെ കയ്യിലെ വടിയും എന്നു അവൾ പറഞ്ഞു. ഇവ അവൾക്കു കൊടുത്തു, അവൻ അവളുടെ അടുക്കൽ ചെന്നു; അവൾ ഗർഭം ധരിക്കയും ചെയ്തു.

18. Enthu Panayam Tharenam Ennu Avan Chodhichathinnu Ninte Mudhramothiravum Mothiracharadum Ninte Kayyile Vadiyum Ennu Aval Paranju. Iva Avalkku Koduththu, Avan Avalude Adukkal Chennu; Aval Garbham Dharikkayum Cheythu.

18. He said, "What pledge should I give you?Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand," she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

19. After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow's clothes again.

20. സ്ത്രീയുടെ കയ്യിൽനിന്നു പണയം മടക്കിവാങ്ങേണ്ടതിന്നു യെഹൂദാ അദുല്ലാമ്യനായ സ്നേഹിതന്റെ കൈവശം ആട്ടിൻ കുട്ടിയെ കൊടുത്തയച്ചു; അവൻ അവളെ കണ്ടില്ലതാനും.

20. Sthreeyude Kayyilninnu Panayam Madakkivaangendathinnu Yehoodhaa Adhullaamyanaaya Snehithante Kaivasham Aattin Kuttiye Koduththayachu; Avan Avale Kandillathaanum.

20. Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.

21. അവൻ ആ സ്ഥലത്തെ ആളുകളോടു: ഏനയീമിൽ വഴിയരികെ ഇരുന്ന വേശ്യ എവിടെ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്നു: ഇവിടെ ഒരു വേശ്യയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല എന്നു അവർ പറഞ്ഞു.

21. Avan Aa Sthalaththe Aalukalodu: Enayeemil Vazhiyarike Irunna Veshya Evide Ennu Chodhichathinnu: Ivide Oru Veshyayum Undaayirunnilla Ennu Avar Paranju.

21. He asked the men who lived there, "Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here," they said.

22. So he went back to Judah and said, "I didn't find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, 'There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here.'"

23. അപ്പോൾ യെഹൂദാ നമുക്കു അപകീർത്തി ഉണ്ടാകാതിരിപ്പാൻ അവൾ അതു എടുത്തുകൊള്ളട്ടെ; ഞാൻ ഈ ആട്ടിൻ കുട്ടിയെ കൊടുത്തയച്ചുവല്ലോ; നീ അവളെ കണ്ടില്ലതാനും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

23. Appol Yehoodhaa Namukku Apakeerththi Undaakaathirippaan Aval Athu Eduththukollatte; Njaan Ee Aattin Kuttiye Koduththayachuvallo; Nee Avale Kandillathaanum Ennu Paranju.

23. Then Judah said, "Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn't find her."

24. ഏകദേശം മൂന്നുമാസം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടു: നിന്റെ മരുമകൾ താമാർ പരസംഗംചെയ്തു, പരസംഗത്താൽ ഗർഭിണിയായിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു യെഹൂദെക്കു അറിവുകിട്ടി. അപ്പോൾ യെഹൂദാ: അവളെ പുറത്തുകൊണ്ടു വരുവിൻ ; അവളെ ചുട്ടുകളയേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

24. About three months later Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant." Judah said, "Bring her out and have her burned to death!"

25. Avale Puraththu Konduvannappol Aval Ammaayappante Adukkal Aalayachu: Ivayude Udamasthanaaya Purushanaal Aakunnu Njaan Garbhiniyaayirikkunnathu; Ee Mudhramothiravum Mothiracharadum Vadiyum Aarkkumllathu Ennu Nokki Ariyenam Ennu Parayichu.

25. As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. "I am pregnant by the man who owns these," she said. And she added, "See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are."

26. യെഹൂദാ അവയെ അറിഞ്ഞു: അവൾ എന്നിലും നീതിയുള്ളവൾ; ഞാൻ അവളെ എന്റെ മകൻ ശേലാവിന്നു കൊടുത്തില്ല എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അതിൽ പിന്നെ അവളെ പരിഗ്രഹിച്ചതുമില്ല.

26. Yehoodhaa Avaye Arinju: Aval Ennilum Neethiyullaval; Njaan Avale Ente Makan Shelaavinnu Koduththilla Ennu Paranju; Athil Pinne Avale Parigrahichathumilla.

26. Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn't give her to my son Shelah." And he did not sleep with her again.

27. അവൾക്കു പ്രസവകാലം ആയപ്പോൾ അവളുടെ ഗർഭത്തിൽ ഇരട്ടപ്പിള്ളകൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

27. Avalkku Prasavakaalam Aayappol Avalude Garbhaththil Irattappillakal Undaayirunnu.

27. When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.

28. Aval Prasavikkumpol Oru Pilla Kai Puraththu Neetti; Appol Soothikarmmini Oru Chuvanna Nool Eduththu Avante Kaikoo Ketti; Ivan Aadhyam Puraththuvannu Ennu Paranju.

28. As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, "This one came out first."

29. അവനോ കൈ പിന്നെയും അകത്തേക്കു വലിച്ചു. അപ്പോൾ അവന്റെ സഹോദരൻ പുറത്തുവന്നു: നീ ഛിദ്രം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയതു എന്തു എന്നു അവൾ പറഞ്ഞു. അതുകൊണ്ടു അവന്നു പെരെസ്സ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.

29. Avano Kai Pinneyum Akaththekku Valichu. Appol Avante Sahodharan Puraththuvannu: Nee Chidhram Undaakkiyathu Enthu Ennu Aval Paranju. Athukondu Avannu Peressu Ennu Perittu.

29. But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, "So this is how you have broken out!" And he was named Perez.

30. Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out and he was given the name Zerah.
